About the Program

The Kaffrine region of Senegal, part of the Groundnut Ecoregion, has experienced extensive land degradation caused by unsustainable agricultural practices including monocropping and overgrazing. The Lifetree Senegal Program, led by Mother Trees, is restoring these degraded landscapes through regenerative agroforestry and forest ecosystem restoration.

The program’s core objectives include:

Establishing 7,000 hectares of agroforestry systems (“forest gardens”) to integrate trees with crops and improve soil health
Reforesting 10,000 hectares of degraded forest areas to enhance biodiversity, increase biomass, and promote carbon sequestration
Improving community livelihoods through cash crop commercialization, technical training, and income diversification
Securing land tenure certificates and ensuring compliance with Verra Standard requirements to strengthen long-term program sustainability

Program Partners

The Lifetree Senegal Program is implemented by Mother Trees in partnership with Terra Global Capital, combining regenerative land restoration expertise with international technical and financial innovation to deliver high-integrity climate, biodiversity, and community outcomes.

Mother Trees: Leads on-the-ground implementation, farmer engagement, and training in regenerative agroforestry and forest ecosystem restoration. Responsible for establishing agroforestry systems (forest gardens), reforesting degraded areas, and building the capacity of cooperatives and community forest management groups
Teranga Cooperative: Serves as the principal cooperative partner and aggregation structure for local farmer cooperatives and GIEs across the project area. Based in Médinatoul Salam II, Teranga mobilizes and coordinates member organizations to strengthen local governance and ensure inclusive participation in project implementation
Terra Global: Provides technical expertise in greenhouse gas quantification, monitoring, reporting, and verification for carbon asset development under market standards. Terra structures and provides climate finance, supports ongoing program management, and commercializes verified emission reductions/removals

Program Activities

Strengthened Community and Institutional Capacity

The Program conducts awareness meetings with communities to introduce program objectives, engage village leadership, and support the approval process for land tenure and community forest management structures.
Governance strengthening is supported through training sessions for lead farmers, co-ops, GIEs, and traditional leaders on sustainable land management, agroforestry implementation, and climate-smart practices.
Community engagement and information sharing are enhanced through regular meetings, launch workshops, farmer mobilization sessions, and communication activities—including radio, TV, and social media outreach.
The Program collaborates with local institutions and authorities, including Eaux et Forêts, cooperatives, GIEs, women’s groups, and emerging aggregation entities, ensuring coordination, alignment of management plans, and the long-term sustainability of community-led structures.

Agroforestry Systems Development

Agroforestry Systems Development (Forest Gardens)

Identification and engagement of smallholder farmers is carried out through village sensitization meetings, farmer selection processes, land approval procedures, and the formation of co-ops and aggregation groups.
Farmers receive comprehensive training on agroforestry design, nursery establishment, seed collection, tree planting, direct seeding, composting, garden management, integrated pest management, and counter season farming techniques.
The Program supports the establishment of central and community nurseries, seed banks, and fruit tree propagation systems to ensure a reliable and diversified seedling supply for forest gardens.
Seedlings, farmer kits, and ongoing extension support are provided throughout the planting and maintenance cycles to ensure survival, productivity, and long-term resilience of agroforestry systems.
Women and youth are supported through dedicated livelihood activities, including VSLA development, cooperative training, processing workshops, and opportunities in non-timber forest products such as beekeeping and honey production.

Forest Conservation & Restoration

The Program establishes nurseries and seed banks dedicated to restoring degraded classified forest areas, ensuring a sustainable supply of native and climate-resilient species.
Reforestation activities are implemented across targeted forest areas, with community participation in tree planting, monitoring survival, and maintaining restored parcels.
Maintenance of forest areas includes community forestry workshops, the development and implementation of forest management plans with Eaux et Forêts, signage installation, and training on agroforestry-based livestock fodder systems.
Forest guardians are equipped through training and the provision of bicycles to enhance mobility for monitoring, patrolling, and preventing encroachment.
Community Forest Management Committees are established and trained to lead governance, stewardship, and long-term protection of classified forests.

Water Access & Climate Resilience

The Program identifies priority locations for new boreholes and watering points to expand access to water for agroforestry systems, cattle, and local communities.
Borehole systems are maintained through locally assigned maintenance workers and ongoing capacity support.
Irrigation infrastructure is installed in phases to improve water availability for forest gardens and enhance resilience to climate variability across multiple years.
Women’s groups are engaged and supported to lead local water access initiatives, ensuring equitable and sustained use of water resources.
Additional man-made waterholes are established and managed in strategic locations to reduce pressure on forest areas and improve livestock management.
