Lunga Community

The Program aims to improve the livelihoods of rural households by aligning forest conservation with economic and social development.

• Supports Community Forest Management Groups (CFMGs) and local leaders to manage forests and natural resources

• Provides training on sustainable agriculture, beekeeping, aquaculture, and other forest-based enterprises

• Promotes gender equity through inclusive governance and training for women and vulnerable populations

• Establishes a grievance mechanism to ensure fair participation and conflict resolution. These actions empower communities to balance economic needs with forest protection while ensuring equitable benefit-sharing across all groups

The Program safeguards one of Zambia’s richest ecological regions, located within the Greater Kafue Ecosystem, which includes Kafue National Park and several Game Management Areas such as Lunga-Luswishi and Bosongo.

• Protects key habitats within the Kafue National Park, the second largest in Africa at 22,480 km², supporting exceptional species richness

• Contributes to the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area, one of the largest conservation initiatives in Africa, enhancing connectivity between managed wildlife areas

• Restores degraded miombo and evergreen forests that provide habitat for elephants, antelopes, big cats, and numerous bird species

• Implements reforestation, managed natural regeneration, and fire management to recover ecosystems and reduce habitat loss

• Strengthens community-led patrols to prevent poaching and illegal harvesting, reducing threats to biodiversity and wildlife populations

Through these actions, the Lunga Community JREDD+ Program helps reverse ecosystem degradation, restore wildlife populations, and strengthen the ecological connectivity essential for long-term biodiversity resilience.

The Program is jointly implemented by TriCarbon Zambia and Terra Global Capital, combining local leadership with international technical expertise to deliver high-integrity climate, community, and biodiversity outcomes.

• TriCarbon Zambia: Leads on-the-ground implementation, stakeholder engagement, and community-based forest management across the project area

• Terra Global: Provides technical expertise in greenhouse gas quantification, monitoring, reporting, and verification for carbon asset development under market standards. Terra structures and provides climate finance, supports ongoing program management, and commercializes verified emission reductions/removals
