The Amigos de Calakmul (ACAC) Community Forestry Program conserves forests managed by Ejidos—rural and indigenous landholder communities—across the buffer zones of the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve (CBR) in Campeche, Quintana Roo, and Yucatán, Mexico. The Program replaces extractive timber practices allowed under Mexican Agrarian Law with legally binding conservation agreements and sustainable livelihood opportunities.
By channeling carbon finance directly to participating Ejidos, the Program provides conservation payments and technical support to communities that voluntarily forgo logging rights. These agreements secure long-term forest protection while advancing the goals of the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor, improving species migration, ecosystem connectivity, and local climate resilience.
Program Area: 210,000 hectares (92,040 ha in Phase 1 across nine Ejidos)
Goal: Protect standing forests, reduce emissions, and enhance biodiversity while improving rural livelihoods
Climate Impact: Generates verified GHG reductions through avoided deforestation and sustainable forest management
Institutional Alignment: Integrated with Mexico’s national REDD+ and sustainable development strategies
The ACAC Program builds a replicable model for inclusive conservation that balances forest protection with community prosperity.
Enhancing ejidos’ governance is ensuring effective participation in conservation efforts. Transparent decision-making, strengthened assemblies, and clear agreements are supporting long-term engagement.
